Celebrating the everyday leaders building a cleaner, connected Indy

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Block program, an initiative rooted in the idea that small, consistent acts of care can create big change across our city. Since its launch, Adopt-A-Block has grown to include over 1,300 Block Captains, neighbors who take the lead in beautifying their streets, inspiring their communities, and showing what it means to take pride in place.

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re shining a light on just a few of the incredible Block Captains whose commitment reflects the true spirit of this program.

Thank you to the City of Indianapolis and the Department of Public Works for their support of the Adopt-A-Block Program.

Ariel Relf – 10th Street & German Church / Cumberland Road

Small actions can lead to big change, and being a Block Captain allows me to lead by example and help others do the same.

For Ariel, community pride runs deep. Inspired by childhood lessons of service and unity, she became a Block Captain to help create a neighborhood where everyone feels safe, seen, and proud. Since joining, she’s seen both physical and emotional changes in her area: cleaner sidewalks, friendlier neighbors, and a renewed sense of shared responsibility. One of her favorite moments? A group of kids jumping into a cleanup with excitement and energy.

Todd Mitchell – Johnson Avenue in Irvington

“This reminds me of my kids and the lessons of giving back to your neighborhood and city.”

For Todd, being a Block Captain is a way to keep alive the values he passed on to his kids: values of giving back, taking care of your surroundings, and doing good for your community. These days, there’s less trash and more pride on his block, and while he still finds joy in every cleanup, he also sees it as a tribute to family and community legacy.

Greg Silver – Oakwood Sunset

Removing trash and planting trees combats pollution and enhances economic prosperity while combating crime.

Greg has been with KIB since the beginning—serving on our Board 20 years ago—and his commitment has only grown stronger. Now as a Block Captain, he focuses on improving neighborhood cleanliness and protecting the White River. Whether it’s teaming up with Shortridge High School’s Key Club or collaborating with Amos Butler Audubon, Greg believes that cleaner streets and greener spaces make for safer, stronger communities.

One of his most rewarding moments? Helping plant trees with local students; an act that, like his leadership, continues to grow lasting roots.

Are You a Block Captain? Help Us Tell the Story!

As we reflect on the past 25 years, we want to hear from YOU—our amazing Block Captains who make this work possible. Whether you’re new to the program or have been walking your block for decades, your stories help us inspire others and celebrate the impact you’re making.
