Home  /  News  /  Meet the 2025 Urban Naturalists

By: Birdie Ratliff

Say hello to the passionate crew of Urban Naturalists bringing joy, energy, and environmental know-how to every corner of the city this season! Each of these Urban Naturalists brings something unique to the field. Whether it’s a deep knowledge of dystopian novels, a passion for local ecology, or a great playlist.

Follow along this season as they plant seeds (literally and figuratively) across Indianapolis!

John Swarr (he/him)

Marian University: Data Analytics, Biology, and Computer Science

John is a dedicated outdoor enthusiast who could talk for hours about cycling, trail running, or hiking just about anywhere. When he’s not working or exploring nature, you might find him playing poker, enjoying sushi, or reading A Sand County Almanac. His favorite tree is a dogwood, and he proudly shares his home with two golden doodles (Maggie and Iris) and two cats (Pike and Pepper). John also collects coffee, spices, and cooking supplies.

Kara Sterry (she/her)

IU Indianapolis: B.S. Biology & M.P.A. Environmental Sustainability & Policy

Kara brings a love of nature, orcas, and artistic expression to the team. She’s happiest when painting, hiking, or spending time outside, especially near her favorite tree, the willow. With two cats named Betty and Mr. Beans and a house full of fun knick-knacks, Kara’s passion for conservation is matched only by her enthusiasm for Interstellar, Uno, and a good plate of pasta. Ask her about marine life—you’ll learn more than you ever thought possible!

Lily Bea Foster (she/her)

Butler University: Psychology & Sociology

Lily Bea is the kind of person who finds joy in the little things—like stickers from places she’s traveled or a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. She loves to hike, journal, and play pickleball, and she’s always down to chat about her favorite dystopian fiction series from the 2010s. Her two golden retrievers, Oliver and Arthur, are constant companions, and she finds inspiration in nature, especially at Eagle Creek.

Sofia Rashid (she/her)

Indiana State University: Geography & Sustainability

Sofia brings big creative energy to the Urban Naturalist crew, with a flair for thrifting, tarot, and a deep appreciation for nature’s little treasures. She collects rocks, records, jewelry, and “any trinket I like”. Sofia shares her home with three cats—Oat, Maple, and Cricket—and can frequently be found birding, hiking, or enjoying a good snack of chocolate trail mix. Whether she’s talking about sustainability or Modern Family, Sofia’s personality is as vibrant as her favorite flowers: peonies and dahlias.

Kila Wilson (she/her)

Indiana State University: Environmental Geoscience

Kila is a creative soul with a love for painting, hiking, and digging into new topics—especially anything related to The Vampire Diaries franchise. She’s a fan of Halloween, pineapple snacks, and songs by Kehlani, and she finds inspiration in the summer sun and long walks with her dog. With a growing crystal collection, Kila adds both energy and insight to every project.

Nya Schank (she/her)

IU Bloomington: Environmental Science

Nya is an animal lover with a cat named Java (aka Jubba, Grubba, Jabba), and she’s always up for a conversation about Parks and Rec, wasabi peas, or the perfect way to cook beans. A fan of springtime and thoughtful stories, she draws from a mix of interests—movies, music, and science—to connect with others and care for her environment.

Jake Bremer (he/they)

Purdue University: Mechanical Engineering

Jake has a deep appreciation for travel, trivia, and the state of Connecticut (ask him about it—he’s got facts!). He collects postcards with a friend, loves tomato soup, and enjoys watching planes, drinking coffee, and going on long walks. With a dog and a cat at home and a love of quiet, intentional routines, Jake rounds out the Urban Naturalist team with dependable energy and grounded insight.
