Indiana fever joins keep indianapolis beautiful to plant 20 trees 
In celebration of team’s 20th season

The Indiana Fever will team with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB), an environmental and community nonprofit, to plant 20 trees to help beautify Indianapolis and celebrate its contribution to the city through its first 20 seasons in the WNBA.

INDIANAPOLIS – (May 10, 2019) The Indiana Fever will team with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB), an environmental and community nonprofit, to plant 20 trees to help beautify Indianapolis and celebrate its contribution to the city through its first 20 seasons in the WNBA.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2019, the entire Fever team and staff will help keep Indianapolis beautiful on Saturday, May 11 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., by planting 20 trees as part of KIB’s Youth Tree Team (YTT) Garden (3655 E. Raymond Street). Twenty shade and fruit trees will add to the area tree canopy and enhance a food production garden that aids youth in learning the value of fresh foods and the environments they grow in, while also providing fruits and vegetables they can share with their families.

“One of our core values is contribution and providing support for our community,” said Fever President and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Allison Barber. A former grade school teacher, she added, “What a great way to make our community more beautiful and sustainable, all while helping educate our youth in the same opportunity!”

KIB hires nearly 100 high school students and young adults annually for the seven-week YTT summer job program that is one part positively impacting the community through tree care and one part work readiness training. KIB’s YTT program is a nonprofit partner of Project Indy, Mayor Joe Hogsett’s summer youth employment program. The Youth Tree Team has been hiring Indianapolis teens and young adults since 2006. 

“Over the last several years in working with the Youth Tree Team, we have noticed many of them lean heavily on processed food for snacks during the day,” said Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Youth Tree Team Manager Libby Furman. “By building our own orchard and garden, hopefully we can get the youth to have an appreciation and affinity for fresh fruits and vegetables – leading to healthier choices overall!”
