A community teaching garden where native plants and community garden beds combine to serve as a gathering space for education and celebration in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood.

VISION FOR THE SPACE

Long time project partner, Felege Hiywot Center, wanted to take an underutilized lot adjacent to a city park and create a teaching garden and native ecosystem to be utilized both by the Center and community at large. The park has three main goals, serve as a teaching center from community members, a gathering space for community celebrations, and reclaiming an underutilized lot for native plants and wildlife.

IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

This project will work to accomplish many things:

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Youth leaders from the Felege Hiywot Center engaged community members throughout the Martindale-Brightwood area. KIB has hired the design firm W/Purpose to assist the youth in the visioning process to help make their vision a reality. Utilizing the  research done by the youth, as well as community design meetings, W/Purpose completed design for the space that balances all the elements important to all involved.
