Baumann Park
By: Emily Wood
NORTHWEST CORNER OF BEECHER AND SINGLETON STREETS, APPROX. 1829-1899 SINGLETON ST.
IMPORTANCE OF THIS PROJECT
This project will accomplish:
- A pocket park to transform four vacant lots into a programmed greenspace with added shade and understory trees, low maintenance landscape beds and a designated open space for the neighborhood.
- A shelter or patio for the park to increase use.
- Combining the efforts of neighbors from five streets partnering with Southeast Neighborhood Development (SEND), the Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood Association and neighborhood businesses.
DESIGN PROCESS
Working from the design, the primary focus for the summer was prepping the space for planting in the fall. Much work was completed by Vaughn Demolition to clean up the lots, improve the soil and ready the ground for receiving native plants and trees. KIB worked closely with INHP at the site in June to amend the soil, map out the beds and lay a naturalistic entry. A beautiful shade pergola was constructed by CRG Residential and the members of Northview Church assembled park benches, playground equipment, picnic tables, and helped spread mulch around the newly planted perennials, trees and shrubs. This space was truly an amazing transformation.
