Why plant trees? What's so important about native plants? Does it really matter if my street is litter-free?
These are questions we get asked all the time. And they get to the heart of our mission: Are we really making a difference in Indianapolis?
While our staff and volunteers may be nodding their heads "yes," that isn't enough. We are a data-driven organization. We believe in backing up our work, from understanding why kids who spend time in nature are happier and healthier to partnering with leading research universities on our own studies.
Clean streets, happy trees, buzzing pollinators, and smiling volunteers are all the recognition we need. But we're pretty proud of the local, state, national and international awards our programs, staff, community partners, and city have received over the years. Here's a sample of the kudos KIB has received from around the world.

Neighborhoods and Individual Volunteers
Our neighborhood partners and volunteers do extraordinary work. Recipients of the 2018 Mayor's Community Service Awards included leaders in our GreenSpace program and an Adopt-A-Block Captain. Our 2013 spring Great Indy Cleanup focus neighborhood was recognized nationally by Neighborhoods, USA as the Neighborhood of the Year. And our partners from Pogues Run Art and Nature Park, where we helped plant over 100 trees, won the 2017 Collaborative Spirit Award from the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center (INRC); Neighborhoods, USA later awarded them first place in the Multi-Neighborhood Partnership category.
