Earth Day is for Every Day with Motor
All I can say is WOW.
April was the Super Bowl x NCAA Basketball tournament x Indy 500 at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. Why?
Spring. Earth Month. Earth Day. Arbor Day. All of the environmental holidays got together and decided to cram themselves into one month. The result? KIB’s busiest time of year for litter cleanups, tree plantings, lunch & learns, native plantings, and everything “green.”
Here’s impact KIB volunteer had in April:

5 greenspace workdays
But one month just isn’t enough. When we say Keep it Beautiful, we’re talking over 300 organized community cleanups a year, over 1,000 Adopt-a-Block captains, working year-round to keep it clean, and thousands of volunteers showing up to plant 3,500 trees.
When we say Keep it Beautiful, we’re talking about our partners at AES Indiana, ClimeCo, and the NCAA stepping up to purchase renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets to make the March Madness games and practices carbon neutral, setting the bar for sustainable events.
When we say Keep it Beautiful, we’re also talking about the changes you can make today and every day to make the air in Indianapolis cleaner, the summers cooler, our waterways healthier, and our streets greener. You can start at home, making a changes big and small that will make a difference.
The Motor Tesla was perfect for an afternoon drive to find public art hidden throughout Indianapolis, part of the Indy Art & Seek project.
Here’s our list of where to start:
1. Adopt your block.
Did you know that the sewer drains on your street lead to the White River? All the litter and leaves that get stuck there end up in our drinking water source. When you adopt your block with KIB, we give you tools like a litter grabber and bucket to turn your Sunday stroll into a litter patrol. But that’s not all! We also give you block captains free native plants and trees for your yard (or to share with a neighbor). Cleaner AND greener streets.
2. Cut back on mowing your lawn.
An entire invisible ecosystem lives in your grass. Bees get early pollen (aka food!) from dandelions. Birds pull worms and bugs out of the dirt for food. Allowing your lawn extra time to grow provides import food sources for our wildlife neighbors. If you have to mow, use a push mower or an electric mower. Gas-powered machines = polluted air. 3. Power your house with renewable energy.
