City-County Councillor, At-Large
What neighborhood do you live in?
Willard Park of Holy Cross Westminster
What is the most inspiring place in Indianapolis?
I love the canal downtown, but I’m inspired most when I’m around other Indy residents working together to make a better Indianapolis. Whether at a tree planting, mural painting, community garden or neighborhood clean-up, there’s nothing like getting your hands dirty with your neighbors.
How long have you supported Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
Recently, I’ve been involved more recently with KIB working on some public policy issues around abandoned parcels. However, I’ve been a Adopt-A-Block Captain for 2 years. I’ve worked on several tree plantings and many neighborhood cleanups over the last 10 years.
Why do you volunteer with KIB?
I think it was Lilly Tomlin who said “Somebody should do something about that.” Then I realized I am somebody.” KIB makes it easy to do the right thing to help Keep Indy Beautiful. I started volunteering with KIB because they were able to help neighborhoods prepare for clean ups. Over the years, I’ve grown more and more passionate about the amazing work that KIB does in Indy. KIB truly understands, at a grassroots level, how to mobilize individuals to take action on their own behalf and improve the essential quality of life concerns. KIB helps make Indianapolis a better city to live in.
What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
I can answer this on two levels. As a fellow neighbor, resident and citizen of Indianapolis, KIB brings the community together and helps us help ourselves. As a result we not only have a more beautiful city but a stronger more connected community.
As a policy maker, KIB saves the taxpayers of Marion County literally hundreds of thousands of dollars every year by helping to organize massive volunteer efforts to keep our city looking its best. Indianapolis and our residents owe a great deal of thanks to KIB and their amazing staff.
What else are you involved in within the community?
Being an At-Large member on the council, I represent the entire county. I’ve gotten to learn about the many other community organizations around Marion County and it’s been great working with them. The council keeps me pretty busy but I’m still very passionate about working with my own neighborhood, Willard Park as well as the Near Eastside Community Organization.
Why would you encourage others to support KIB?
KIB is the perfect organization for people to support in time, talent and treasure. The projects that KIB works on are not glamorous but they make a huge impact on our city. Whether it’s planting trees and flowers, community clean ups, painting murals over graffiti or a myriad of other tasks there is place for you at KIB. Your city needs you.
And, I would remind them of the Edmond Burke quote: “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little”.
If you were describing KIB to a friend, what three words would you use?
Organized, passionate and effective!
Indianapolis has so many great civic organizations worthy of a person’s time and effort; too many to even try and name. But KIB embodies the essence of true civic engagement and grassroots problem solving; I would have to say it’s one of the best things about Indy. KIB does so many amazing things for our city. I can’t even begin to say what an honor it is to be the Volunteer of the Month. Thanks to KIB, their staff and the thousands of volunteers who make it all possible.
