YOUTH TREE TEAM

Preserving and Maintaining Trees Around Indianapolis

The Youth Tree Team started in 2006 to help water and mulch trees planted through the KIB Neighborwoods program. Today, 8 crews help preserve and maintain more than 5,000 trees each year.

The Youth Tree Team is a seven-week summer program for high school students. Participants receive a free lunch each work day and earn $8.00 per hour for their work! Youth Tree Team members work 20 hours a week, with their crew, to water, mulch, prune, stake, and plant trees. Each crew consists of 8 high school students and two adult leaders.Youth applicants must currently be enrolled in high school to participate.

Who makes up the Youth Tree Team?

The Youth Tree Team (YTT) is a select group of Indianapolis high school aged youth with adult leaders. Youth applicants must currently be enrolled in high school. We are seeking candidates who have the following characteristics: Initiative, Professionalism, Respect, Interest in the environment, Pride in your work, Responsibility and the ability to work well with a team. Click here to Meet the 2012 Crew.

What Kind of Work does YTT do?

The Youth Tree Team works to preserve and maintain trees planted through the NeighborWoods Program. We work outdoors to water, mulch, prune, stake, and plant trees. Other duties include consistent attendance and punctuality, weeding, litter clean-up, working harmoniously with team members, follow crew leader directions, participating fully in enrichment activities, filling out work logs and other duties as assigned. Along with daily work activities,The Youth Tree Team does weekly enrichment activities including, a wilderness camping trip, learning financial management skills, networking with green-collar professionals, and rafting on the White River.

2013 Program Dates

The 2013 Summer Youth Tree Team will work Mon - Thurs from June 17 to August 1
Youth work 20 hours per week (5 hours per day, 4 days per week).

The Four-Step Application Process for Youth :


Step 1: Register
Fill out your application by Monday, February 25
Step 2: Challenge Day
Saturday, March 2
Through a series of fun obstacles you will be challenged to work hard, get your hands dirty and be part of the team.
Step 3: Volunteer
Saturday, April 6
Applicants who work hard at Challenge Day will be invited to a tree planting.
Step 4: Interview
Sunday, May 5
After you have completed steps 1-3, we will invite you to do a job interview.

Requirements to be an adult leader:

High School diploma or equivalent
Valid US Driver's License
Ability to carry 40lb buckets of water while walking several hundred feet
