VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: JUNE 2011

Sam Ryan

Occupation:
I live in Fountain Square, Student grade 4, at Center For Inquiry School 2

How long have you been volunteering with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
I have helped with cleaning our street and planting before, but last year I lead and organized our block clean up and KIB helped by giving me things like gloves and trash bags. We had a great turn out and were even on channel 6 news.

This year I was part of Lemonade Day and in planning this I thought that it would be a good cause to raise money for KIB because they had helped me with bags and gloves when we did our clean up. I wanted this to be available to more people around Indianapolis.

Why do you choose to partner with KIB on projects?
KIB can help with supplies, knowledge, and they are good at getting the word out to our whole city so they can help more people and do bigger projects.

What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
I think it’s been great how they’ve cleaned up the community and helped neighborhoods re do areas with plants and art.

Why would you encourage others to volunteer with KIB?
This is where we live let’s make it the best place possible.

Sam Ryan, a fourth grader at the Center for Inquiry School #2 and a Fountain Square resident, joined forces with Jeanette and Taki Sawi at Santorini Greek Kitchen to take lemonade to the next level. Sam setup his Lemonade Day stand on Sunday, May 1 at 1417 Prospect Street. Proceeds from SamÂ’'s stand went to benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, whose headquarters are in Fountain Square, just up Shelby Street at Fletcher Avenue. Sam will designate that the funds be used for the Adopt-a-Block Program, which encourages clean neighborhoods by giving blocks tools, gloves, trash bags, and flowers.
