VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: NOVEMBER 2011

David Becker

Occupation:

CEO, First Internet Bank of Indiana

How long have you been volunteering with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
I have worked with David Forsell, President of KIB, on business issues for the past year. I have tried to share some of my 30-year entrepreneurial experience with David to assist in the growth of KIB. One of my favorite business quotes is “we are too good not to be better.” I believe that KIB fits that description perfectly and I have had an opportunity to meet with the senior management and the Board of Directors to work on their strategic plan to make KIB better. My employees have also worked on a number of KIB volunteer projects.

Why do you choose to volunteer with KIB?
I am a “country kid” at heart. I grew up in Monrovia, IN and I loved everything about being in the country—working on farms, romping through the woods, growing a garden, etc. I think KIB helps to bring some of that experience into the city and makes the city a better place to live.

What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
Many studies have shown the value of “greenspace“ in the cities. The trees are beautiful whether you are walking down a tree-lined boulevard in the fall or flying over the city. They cut down on pollution, enhance the value of property, etc. The gardens bring a spirit of community to neighborhoods that few programs, can and in some cases are the only source of fresh vegetables in the area. Nothing is more satisfying than planting a seed and nurturing it to harvest.

What is your favorite memory of volunteering with KIB?
The enthusiasm of everyone I have met within KIB is off the charts. Their passion makes work fun, not a chore, and insures the success of the organization.

Why would you encourage others to volunteer with KIB?
Because it is fun and you have immediate tangible results when you work on one of their projects. You make a difference in the community that only gets better with time.
