TREE TENDERS
Tree Tenders are KIB volunteers who have a passion for trees. They are spirited learners, excited to learn and serve as advocates for urban forest in their communities. They are people in your community who you can ask question of about trees and get knowledgeable answers. They love to get their hands dirty, and are committed to planting trees in their community, helping KIB on tree planting projects across the city, and managing small groups of volunteers at KIB tree plantings.
How do I become a Tree Tender?
STEP 1
Take the Tree Steward Training. This course is offered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Community and Urban Forestry Department. KIB is a partner on this training, and all potential Tree Tenders will be underwritten by KIB (a value of $30). There is a commitment of 5 Thursday evenings for a total of 6 hours.
STEP 2
Apply to be a Tree Tender with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
STEP 3
Take the KIB Project Management Training. This will be two half Saturdays of training in project management, led by the KIB Tree Team. The first Saturday will be a presentation-based workshop, and the second Saturday will be a field shadowing experience, where the project manager will lead you step-by-step through how we manage volunteer workdays.
STEP 4
Lead a tree planting demonstration at a KIB project. After your project management training, KIB will set up a day with you where you will come to a KIB planting and lead a group of volunteers in the tree planting demonstration. KIB staff will watch and provide you with an evaluation. There is a commitment of one Saturday for a total of 3 hours.
STEP 5
Help KIB manage a tree planting project! After you have completed the Tree Tender Training, we would like you to volunteer at least 3 times over the course of the season. You will be asked to help in one of the following ways:
- Assist staff leading KIB tree planting workdays at sites all across the city - help manage volunteers, assist with registration, lead tree planting demonstrations, etc.
- Lead a tree planting in your neighborhood, with your neighbors.
- In the summer, lead a mulching/watering project.
