TRADERS POINT GATEWAY

Working Together;  Building a Native Landscape

Project Location: Near the Intersection of 71st Street and Lafayette Road

Project Description: In 2007 Keep Indianapolis Beautiful worked with the Traders Point Gateway Committee to blend an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) maintenance facility into the surrounding woodland, using native trees and shrubs to selectively mask unsightly views. The landscape plan treated the site’s most prominent feature, the salt barn as a piece of garden architecture. The plantings were designed to hide or draw the eye away from the chain link fence and piles of gravel at its base and away from the storage vessels and utility vehicles in the parking lot.

In 2009, KIB completed the second phase of this project by doubling the number of plants, adding trees and spreading over 40 yards of mulch. This project benefited from the hard work of master gardeners and had the cooperation of INDOT and the support of committed neighbors.
