THE PROJECT SCHOOL OF INDIANAPOLIS

Address: 1145 E. 22nd St., 46202 (Center Township)
School Website: www.indianapolisprojectschool.org/
General Overview of the School: The Project School of Indianapolis (K-8th) is set east of the Monon Trail on the south side of 22nd St. They are a charter school with an environmental focus. To date, PSI has been able to raise funds for all of their beds, seeds, tools and materials to begin the urban gardening program without spending a significant amount of money from the school’s budget. PSI has become well-known in the “green circles” of Indianapolis as a school that is fully committed to environmental advocacy and education.
General Overview of the PSI KIB Club: Led by Kate Savich, the 4th/5th grade instructional assistant, the club consists of a current group of kids ranging in age that meet regularly during and after school. The club will be focused on maintaining the projects as well as community outreach, such as adopting a mile of the Monon Trail.
General Overview of Landscape Design Plan: PSI has a very small campus in regards to greenspace so selection of plant material is crucial. There are a few trees already on campus that the club would like to identify as well as provide a tag for so other folks can learn what they are. There is still some room for a few more trees and they’d like to utilize it. A vegetable garden has already been installed and is growing very well, but needs some expertise in design and maintenance and eventually expanded. The KIB Club is interested in doing recycling outreach to the surrounding community with the numerous churches that are in the area. The KIB Club is also interested in developing an area for a native garden/habitat area.
Recent Projects
On November 5th, 2010 members of The Projects School's KIB Club helped volunteers from the American Heart Association plant 19 trees throughout their campus. Due to power lines and lack of greenspace at the school, the trees had to be carefully selected and placed. Tree species included Winter King Hawthorne, Ninebark and Chokecherry.
On October 12th, 2011, members of the American Bar Association helped plant 23 native trees at Zion Hill Baptist Church located down the street from The Project School of Indianapolis. The KIB club will help to maintain and water these trees.
