SOUTHPORT HIGH SCHOOL

Location: 971 E. Banta Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46227

Description: Located on the far southside of Indianapolis, this was a first year project. Headed by science teach Russ Sumner, 2 courtyards located in the center of the school building were rarely being used because of their appearance and the accessibility. After general clean-up of the 2 areas, mulch and gravel was laid for a new pathway, trees and perennials were planted for beautification, lumber was used to build benches and a trellis, and recycled portions of the RCA Dome roof material was used for a pond. After a couple of workdays, it was hard to believe that it was the same courtyard. There is still work to be done with the pond and the trellis. They would also like to incorporate rain barrels for easy watering of the trees and shrubs.
