SEND TRIANGLE GATEWAY

Hopes are high for our 2010 projects
Neighbors and community leaders come together to plan for upcoming projects

Alabama St. Median; Bates Hendricks Neighborhood

This project is similar although not as ambitious as the 2008 South New Jersey median planting. While this median is only one block in length, it is 50 feet in width. In addition, the ends of the median are set back from the cross streets providing a significant amount of right-of-way that may be used as hardscape seating and/or public art space. Our partner has been meeting for months and has already recruited strong neighborhood support and project partners. Partners include the city of Indianapolis which has agreed to install and pay for lights, LISC, the Bates Hendricks Neighborhood and SEND. $2,000 to $4,000 Sponsorship Opportunity: Yes, signage for sponsors.

Indiana Reentry & Education Facility Beautification (Formerly the Indiana Women’s Prison) 401 North Randolph Street

This project will help transform the perimeter of the former Indiana Women’s Prison by adding landscaping as the multiple layers of chain-link fencing and razor wire are removed for a more, "neighborhood friendly" solution. This transformation to a more, “neighborhood friendly” solution is being made possible by the conversion of this facility into a low security, men’s re-entry and educational facility. The positive impact of this on the surrounding neighborhoods will be tremendous. The IREF residents have demonstrated their ability to maintain landscaping Plainfield are a big part of the maintenance plan. and they have demonstrated that they are capable at the Plainfield PREF facility. Volunteers for this project will include neighborhood residents, KIB volunteers as well as IREF residents and Staff. In addition to removing the existing fencing, volunteers will plant trees, shrubs and flowers.

Fox Hill Estates Pond Naturalization - 1527 Royal Lake Circle, Northeast Side:

This is a retention pond naturalization project. The pond is very visible from two main streets and is accessible to the neighbors and community alike. Their greenspace committee is very motivated and envisions their pond being transformed by a native shoreline buffer as well as the installation of trees and shrubs. This project will deter geese, filter rainwater, prevent erosion and beautify. In the future, the neighborhood would like to install a crushed stone or mulch path around the lake as well as a deck that would project over the water and provide access to fishing for residents.

Garfield Neighbors Median Planting - Raymond Street between Shelby Street. and Madison Avenue, Near Southside

This project will include the installation of trees, grasses and shrubs on three Raymond St. medians near Garfield Park. This is a highly visible area that could use trees to beautify and calm traffic. This group has committed to buying water tank to place in a pickup truck in order to water their medians. With additional funds this planting could be expanded to include the medians to the east and west and have a larger impact on the area. These medians are currently mowed and adopted by Mattingly Fred & Sons Lawn Care and Garfield Neighbors. We would like to work with the existing adopters to support the plantings and continue to maintain the medians.

Southwest Health Center Beautification - 3401 E. Raymond Street, WIDC Area

This Health Net facility is relocating to Morris and Harding into a beautiful old Masonic Lodge building. They have committed to “going green” and want KIB to help them implement their green landscape plan. This includes native plants a green wall a pervious parking lot and a rain garden. The landscape of the Southwest Health Center will beautify a key intersection in the WIDC Neighborhood and will become an important demonstration sustainable development in Indianapolis.

Highland Vicinity Gateway, 2902 and 2905 North Capital Avenue, Highland Vicinity Neighborhood,

This project will transform two corners at Capital and 29th street with beautiful gateway landscapes consisting of trees shrubs and perennials. These corners were formerly the site of gas stations and are currently grass-filled gravel lots that are a detriment to the neighborhood. We hope to Partner with IndyGo to install a bus shelter at the existing bus stops.

Seeds of Hope Garden - 2870 Olney Street, Martindale Brightwood Neighborhood

This will be a recurring project from 2009. We worked with Lillian Rucker's Seeds of Hope Garden in 2009 There were significant challenges but made tangible progress.

SEND Greenspace - Morris Street Between East and the Madison Ave. Overpass, Southeast Side

This project will beautify the busy Morris Street corridor Between East Street and the Madison Avenue overpass. This project will dovetail with the 2009, “Under the Sea” mural to the west and the East St. Corridor Improvements to the East. This project will benefit residents and commuters alike and will include space for public art installations.

Slow Food Indy Community Garden - 801 West Washington Street, White River State Park

This project will support a demonstration, urban farm at the very popular White River State Park. They have received other grants to supplement their operations but are relying on KIB for design assistance and help with building landscape structures such as trellises and arbors.

Windsor Park Gateway - Northeast Corner of E. 10th Street and Brookside Ave

This project will involve redesigning and replanting the Windsor Park gateway at 10th and Brookside Parkway. While it has stood for many years, the neighborhood would like to take it to the next level by working with a landscape architect and adding new plant material. In addition, we will include a crocus planting to this project in order to expand the vision of the neighborhood to be the premere crocus neighborhood in Indianapolis.

Athenaeum Native Vegetated Filter, 401 E. Michigan Street

This project will take place on the northern grounds of the Athenaeum Building. Our 2009 planting was delayed as a result of permitting issues. This project will include the installation of a native vegetated filter, landscaping, patios and benches. We are working with the city to obtain all of the necessary permits and to streamline the process for other urban, rain garden projects.

trees planted since 2006.
