INDIANAPOLIS – (May 8, 2013) Oaklandon Elementary will receive an outdoor classroom this Friday May 10, with the help of more than 200 Roche Diagnostics (Roche) employees as part of its annual Day of Service event with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB).
“Roche is proud to once again support Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s efforts, and partner on this multi-faceted community greening project,” said Tom Adkins, SVP of Roche Diagnostics Organization. “Getting out into the community with a wonderful organization like KIB helps make our city a better place, strengthens our commitment to sustainability, and reinforces our model of professional collaboration.”
More than 300 students together with 200 Roche volunteers will be working at the environmental studies magnet school to help provide students with hands-on experience and daily access to nature in the school’s outdoor learning lab. This will include planting nearly 200 trees on the school’s campus, sprucing up the existing gardens, creating new gardens, planting near the pond and in a nature play area, painting inside and outside the school, putting in a mulch trail, and weeding.
“Working closely alongside Roche employees to beautify another Indianapolis school speaks specifically to our work of creating vibrant impact: helping people and nature thrive,” said David Forsell, president of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “By transforming this space and creating added value to the environment in which these students learn and play; this project will not only leave a lasting impact on the youth, but the volunteers and the community.”
Additional support for this project was made possible by Indianapolis Power & Light; their donations helped to pay for trees planted at the school. For more information on KIB’s efforts to beautify the city, to learn about KIB programs or to donate, please visit www.kibi.org.
