INDIANAPOLIS – (May 10, 2012) Brook Park Elementary will receive an outdoor classroom this Friday May 11, with the help of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) and more than 200 Roche Diagnostics (Roche) employees as part of its annual Day of Service event.
Nearly 100 trees will be planted on the school’s campus, as well as the construction of a rain garden, and raised garden beds – all to create an outdoor learning lab. More than 2,500 native plants will be installed on this one-day service event.
“Roche is a proud supporting partner of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, said Tom Adkins, SVP of Roche Diagnostics Organization. “This will be a great day to add muscle to a wonderful organization, but also model professional collaboration and commitment to sustainability for the kids at Brook Park Elementary.”
More than 300 students together with Roche volunteers will be working at the environmental magnet school to provide the students with daily access to nature, including converting an old running track into a large bio-retention basin landscaped with native plants. As a KIB Club, Brook Park Elementary engages students, educators and caring adults in the renewal of public spaces by working closely with to provide learning opportunities and beautify the community.
“This opportunity for Roche employees to join students to transform an outdoor space by planting trees, building a rain garden and raised beds will leave a lasting impact not only on the community, but the volunteers,” said David Forsell, president of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “Our work is about building a community through environmental improvement, this project is a true representation of that mission.”
