Frequently Asked Questions
About the Recycle Indianapolis Program

Can caps and tops to plastic and glass containers be recycled at the Recycle Indianapolis locations?
No, caps and tops to glass and plastic containers cannot be recycled at the Recycle Indianapolis locations. Please remove these tops before dropping off your recyclables.

What is corrugated cardboard?
Corrugated cardboard has smooth outer layers and a wavy inner layer.  You can recycle corrugated cardboard at these
drop-off locations.

When I bring my recyclables in bags or boxes, can these items also be thrown into the Recycle Indianapolis containers?
No, the Recycle Indianapolis containers do not accept cardboard boxes, plastic bags or paper bags, even if they are used to transport recyclables. We ask residents to dump out their recyclables from the bags and boxes into the bins. See our Recycling and Reuse Options page for locations to recycle cardboard boxes, paper and plastic bags.

Can plastic bags that are #1 and #2 plastic be placed in the Recycle Indianapolis containers?
No. Though the Recycle Indianapolis Program accepts #1 and #2 food and beverage containers, the program does not accept #1 and #2 plastic bags. All Wal-Mart locations, however, do accept ALL plastic grocery bags for recycling inside their stores. Thanks Wal-Mart!

Can I recycle phone books?
The City's Recycle Indianapolis drop-off locations are no longer able to accept phone books for recycling. The material used to produce phone books has been recycled so many times the paper/wood fibers are minimal, and the cost of transportation outweighs the value. (You can test this yourself by placing a drop of water on a page of a phone book - the paper dissolves.) Indianapolis Recycled Fiber is willing to take phone books for recycling at their facility at 1775 S. West St. The bin is available 24/7.

Can I take office paper and junk mail to Recycle Indianapolis locations?
No, the Recycle Indianapolis locations only accept newspapers and magazines. There are, however, many locations to take paper, office paper, magazines, junk mail as well as newspapers. See our Recycling and Reuse Options for this information.  Or to search for a Paper Retriever Recycle container location nearest you, click here.

How do I sign up for Curbside Recycling?
Curbside recycling is a program managed by the City of Indianapolis. To sign up for curbside recycling call the Mayor’s Action Center at 327-4MAC.
