Keep Indianapolis Beautiful/Purdue Extension-Marion County
Program Criteria
- School must be located in Marion County.
- The needs of the school and site evaluation will aid in determining selection.
- Must show support and willingness to be involved.
- 3-5 committee members (can be teachers, parents, etc.) are required to attend the Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) "Discovering the Science of the Environment" summer workshop if this is the first time the school has received a grant from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. - Must have custodial staff’s support of the project.
- Must have Principal’s support of the project.
- Must have endorsement from PTO; PTO should provide some volunteers.
- Must include students; students need to be involved with the project development and installation.
- Must be willing to solicit community support; support can be solicited from churches, businesses, police, parents in their school neighborhood, etc.
- Must provide some sort of "in-kind" service such as food for volunteer workers, notifying the community via flyers, contacting local businesses for goods, recruitment of potential volunteers, writing thank-you letters, etc.
- Must be willing and have available space to host meetings and workshops at school.
- Must involve special (inter-disciplinary) area teachers; this includes music, art, special ed., librarian, P.E., etc.
- Must create and prioritize wish list. This list should have input from the principal, teachers, support staff, administration, parents, students, and especially custodial staff. The list should be included with the application.
- Must involve teachers in the role of supervision and preparation of students for the workday. All staff, volunteers, and students should wear name tags on the workday.
- Must coincide with the curriculum/scope and sequence.
- Must provide a place to make all materials accessible to teachers and students. The library is a preferred place.
- Must accept ownership of project; school will serve as an equal partner in project.
- Must continue with project goals, especially after completion of the work-day.
- Must participate in public relations/promotions, especially with schools interested in applying.
- Must sign attached contract and return it with application.
- Must maintain project. Expansion is often necessary.
- Must create maintenance plan and provide copy prior to first workday for approval. A watering schedule, which is critical to the survival of plant materials in the first three years, must be organized and conducted by school staff.

- Creation of a steering committee is recommended.
- Sustainability of project is crucial.
