Vibrant Corridors

A civic-led, public art initiative to beautify the downtown environment and help create exciting neighborhoods and travel corridors.

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Downtown Indy have partnered to fund and create painted mural artwork in gateway underpasses around downtown, in a civic-led initiative called Vibrant Corridors. Vibrant Corridors transforms underpasses into beautiful community assets, employs artists, engages local businesses as suppliers, and motivates community volunteers to improve the city.

“These public works of art will take away the gray and make Indy neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work. “The Vibrant Corridors project is one more example of Indy setting itself apart as a unique destination.”

—Mayor, Greg Ballard

Where will the murals be painted?

    • Central Avenue under I-65
    • Alabama St. under I-65
    • College Avenue under I-65
    • Vermont St. under I-65/I-70

  • Who selected these locations?

Locations for these murals were determined through the Velocity Plan, a comprehensive, community-driven five-year action plan led by Downtown Indy to prioritize the development of central Indianapolis. One of the tactics embodied in Velocity is to target key underpasses as gateways from neighborhoods to Downtown and vice versa, and to enhance them with improved lighting and new artwork.

  • When will these murals be completed and who will paint them?

Murals will be painted on October 2 by Eli Lilly and Company volunteers as part of their annual Lilly Day of Service in conjunction with Indy Do Day. More than 150 volunteers will complete this work on one day. Additionally, volunteers recruited by Downtown Indy will also complete some of the mural work.

  • What artists are painting the murals?

Artists for Vibrant Corridors were selected through a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process through the Arts Council and juried by the Arts Council’s Public Art Selection Committee. The call for artists resulted in supremely qualified talent commissioned to design the artworks, and the neighborhoods surrounding the murals have been engaged in helping the artists understand their history, aspirations and concerns.

Artists selected for this initiative include:

  • When will the designs be unveiled?

Community engagement efforts with the primary neighborhoods impacted by this project are underway, and proposed designs for the murals will be presented to the neighborhoods by the artists at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s offices on Monday, September 8th at 5:30pm. Currently, onsite work to prepare the underpass walls is taking place.

  • How is this initiative being funded?

Funding for Vibrant Corridors is provided in part by the Lilly Foundation and the Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, with support from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and Downtown Indy.
