Adopt-A-Block Schools

Adopt-A-Block Schools program engages students of all ages in civic responsibility through reducing litter, combating graffiti, tackling high weeds and grass, and building community at the smallest city unit—their school block!

  • Why every block counts
    Why every block counts

The Adopt-A-Block program energizes neighborhood volunteers to participate in community activities. Street by street, neighbors inspire each other by setting an example of environmental and community stewardship, dramatically improving their quality of life.

Schools participating in the Adopt-A-Block program give students hands on opportunities to engage in civic leadership, how citizens can participate responsibly and effectively in the civic life, and a deeper understanding about the responsibilities of United States citizens.

    How we build vibrant communities

The Adopt-A-Block program empowers neighbors to bring beautification and neighborhood revitalization down to the smallest unit, the block. Neighbors keep their block clean of litter on an on-going basis, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful provides them with tools and resources to help in their efforts. Individuals volunteer as block coordinators to lead in their block’s beautification.

KIB provides the tools, trees, and flowers, and neighbors beautify our city together, block by block.

    • Gain the cooperation of students, staff, and parents to keep your block clean, whether that means daily pick up, a weekly cleanup or a monthly effort.
      • Note: Schools may be scored during school breaks.
    • Let your school community know about the resources available for your block through Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.  From free trainings to trees, we are here to help!
  • What KIB provides
    • Each school coordinator receives a cleanup kit that includes: a litter-grabber, trash bags, and gloves.
    • We also host training sessions and social events that enable block coordinators to collaborate and celebrate their successes. Please stay tuned to see what’s coming up!
    • To encourage friendly competition, KIB scores each block on a scale of 1 to 4, with a score of 1 indicating a completely litter-free block. Each spring, blocks with an average of 2 or better are eligible to receive a colorful variety of FREE perennials!
      • Note: Schools may be scored during school breaks.
    • All blocks, regardless of their cleanliness score, have the opportunity to receive FREE TREES in the fall through Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Community Forestry program!
