FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ENTRIES DUE OCTOBER 2 FOR 32nd ANNUAL MONUMENTAL AFFAIR AWARDS
2009 Theme Features Environmental Building Best Practices in Central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Entries for the best of Indianapolis design, development, construction, engineering, public art and innovative reuse are due Friday, October 2 by 5:00 p.m. to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, 1029 E. Fletcher Ave.

Projects will be awarded during the Monumental Affair banquet, which begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m., November 18, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

In line with this year’s theme: “Innovation in Indy,” the program includes the new, “re-thINk” award, which will be juried by the U.S. Green Building Council and honor sustainable design and construction.

Dr. Randall Howard, Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer at Ball State University will speak about the university’s geothermal project, which is the largest of its kind in the U.S. Dr. Howard will talk about the project’s financial and environmental impacts, and how the project has elevated Ball State to a nationally recognized leadership position in sustainability.

This year’s Monumental Affair “Innovation in Indy” program also includes three afternoon seminars featuring more in-depth discussion about green building practices in Indiana. The three one-hour sessions include:

  •  “Sustainability in Indiana: Past, Present and Future” by Bill Brown, director of sustainability at Indiana University.
  •   “Navigating Government Policy: Local, National” a panel discussion with panelists Karen Haley, director of SustainIndy, the City of Indianapolis Office of Sustainability, Jesse Kharbanda, executive director of the Hoosier Environmental Council, and Kristina Tridico, attorney, Ice Miller.
  • “Local Best Practices” – roundtable discussions featuring leading sustainable projects including the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and Nature Conservancy buildings and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick.

Workshops will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The location is pending. Check www.kibi.org/monumental for updates.

Tickets for the Monumental Affair awards dinner are $80 each or $600 for a table of eight. Tickets for the seminar are $50. To purchase tickets or tables, contact Laura Fox at lfox@kibi.org or 317-264-7555 ext. 100.

Proceeds from the Monumental Affair seminar and awards dinner benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB). KIB is a not-for-profit that unites people to build community and transform public spaces through aesthetic and environmental improvement.
