Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and the City of Indianapolis wrap up the Great Indy Cleanup kickoff with more than 50 neighborhood projects this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – (April 29, 2011) Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) will be working all over the city this weekend on numerous beautification and community improvement projects, with hundreds of Indy residents to wrap up the Great Indy Cleanup kickoff. The citywide effort to beautify and strengthen our community is a partnership with KIB and the City of Indianapolis--already over 1 million pounds of litter have been collected this month!

The Great Indy Cleanup continues into October with organized cleanups scheduled throughout the year. Additional projects this weekend include tree planting as part of KIB’s NeighborWoods program, sponsored by Indianapolis Power & Light Company, and part of the 2,012 trees by 2012 initiative; as well as urban garden plantings.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and Mayor Ballard
WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup – Angels from the Heart Cleanup
WHERE: Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1530 S Union)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
KIB and more than 300 volunteers from Catholic churches all over the community will be working all around the parish. Convanta Energy, Southside Landfill, Republic Services, Kroger, PNC Bank, IMCPL, and the YMCA will all be honored for their participation in the Great Indy Cleanup. This is the official kick off press event, Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers and make remarks at 8:30 A.M.

WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup – Pleasant Run Creek Cleanup
WHERE: Garfield Park United Church of Christ (743 E Pleasant Run Pkwy South Drive)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
KIB and more than 200 Indy residents will be along Pleasant Run which runs through Ellenberger, Christian and Garfield Parks.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and LITHO Press
WHAT: Near East Side Tree Planting
WHERE: Mass Ave & 16th Street (1747 Massachusetts Ave)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB and Litho Press will be planting 101 trees to make their greenspaces more welcoming to their neighbors in this near east side community. These trees will be planted as part of the 2,012 trees by 2012 initiative.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
WHAT: Grace Tuxedo Park Pocket Park Build
WHERE: Sherman Ave & East Washington Street (29 N Grant Ave)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB and members of Grace Tuxedo Baptist Church will be creating a pocket park for the neighborhood that will have an open plan for many large neighborhood events, plus some space for kids to play. This is a prep day for the park project, and will include a community litter cleanup as part of the Great Indy Cleanup.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
WHAT: Green Acres Urban Farm Work Day
WHERE: South Meridian and Morris Streets (1720 S Delaware Ave)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 8 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB will be assisting residents in establishing four community gardens. The residents have named their project Green Acres Urban Farm.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield
WHAT: Spades Park Tree Planting
WHERE: Spades Park (1801 Nowland Ave)
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 8 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB and more than 70 Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield volunteers will plant trees in Spades Park as part of the 2,012 trees by 2012 initiative.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and the West Indianapolis Development Corporation Cleanup
WHAT: Litter Cleanup and Tree Planting
WHERE: intersection of West Morris Street and Tremont Street
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 8 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB and volunteers will be planting trees as the first phase of the community gateway project. A community garden will also be installed, as well as a neighborhood cleanup. Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers and give remarks at 9:15 A.M.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc., WE CAN Community/The Fuller Center/Villa Improvement Club
WHAT: Litter Cleanup
WHERE: 1100 block of St. Paul Street.
WHEN: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 8 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB and more than 100 neighborhood volunteers will be out picking up litter and major debris in the area.
