Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and 39 neighborhood groups will be transforming neighborhoods this weekend

April 15, 2011


INDIANAPOLIS – (April 15, 2011) Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) will be working all over the city this weekend on numerous beautification and community improvement projects. Hundreds of Indy residents will be out volunteering their time; due in large part to the Great Indy Cleanup, a citywide effort to beautify and strengthen our communities. This program is a partnership with KIB and the City of Indianapolis. Trees will also be planted this weekend with help from Indianapolis Power & Light Company.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc., Mayor Greg Ballard and INDYCOG
WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup – Monon Trail Cleanup
WHERE: Monon Trail (38th Street to 10th Street)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers at 9:00 A.M. KIB and INDYCOG, along with more than 25 volunteers will take part in a litter cleanup of the Monon Trail from 38th Street to 10th Street.

WHAT: Arsenal Street Tree Planting and Great Indy Cleanup
WHERE: Arsenal Street – 1705 North Arsenal Street (Near East 16th St. & College Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers at 10:00 A.M. This is a continuation of an effort to plant 500+ trees in the Martindale-Brightwood area community. Over 300 trees have been planted to date. This will also be in conjunction with the Great Indy Cleanup event.

WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup
WHERE: 2532 N. Harding Street
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 8 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers at 11:00 A.M. KIB and North Meridian Street United Methodist Church and Riverside Civic League volunteers we will clean up trash, beautify medians and plant small trees from Washington Street to 38th, and from Emerson to Riverside.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and Mayor Greg Ballard
WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup
WHERE: Watson-McCord (Near College and East 36th Street)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 3 P.M.
Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers at noon. KIB and Butler Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity volunteers will assist area residents in a neighborhood cleanup, including mulching of trees and beautifying two city parks, more than 50 volunteers are expected.

WHAT: Great Indy Cleanup
WHERE: Crown Hill Neighborhood Cleanup (Coppin Chapel AME, 3201 N. Capital Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 2 P.M.
Mayor Ballard to greet volunteers at 1:00 P.M. KIB and Crown Hill neighbors will be gathering litter and cleaning up trash in the area.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
WHAT: Franklin Central Christian Church Tree Planting
WHERE: Near South Franklin Road & Southeastern Avenue
WHEN: Saturday, April 15, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
KIB volunteers will be planting trees to the rather barren land around the church property, some of which borders Southeastern and Franklin Rd.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
WHAT: Community Gardening
WHERE: Green Acres Urban Farm (Near South Meridian and Morris Streets)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9 A.M. TO 12 P.M.
Four community gardens are being established through a partnership with Green Acres Urban Farm and local residents. Each garden will consist of plantings that residents requested. Each garden will have various vegetables and a shade structure for gatherings.

WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. Youth Tree Team
WHAT: Tree Planting
WHERE: Southwestway Park (5624 S Carroll Rd.)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 7:30 A.M. TO12:00 P.M.
Youth will plant 50 trees in Southwestway Park.

Sunday
WHO: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
WHAT: Tree Planting
WHERE: Indian Creek Elementary (10833 E 56th St.)
WHEN: Sunday, April 17, 2011, 1:00 P.M. TO 3 P.M.
KIB along with students and parents will be constructing a reading oriented pocket park in front of the school that will provide quiet outdoor space for classes as well as a beautiful entrance to the school building.
