INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RECEIVES THE 2009 MONUMENTAL AWARD

INDIANAPOLIS – The 32nd annual Monumental Affair Awards ceremony held Wednesday, November 18 announced 37 awards representing the most significant visual and physical enhancements in Marion County. The Indianapolis International Airport took home the coveted Monumental Award as the most significant project of the year.

Other top award winners included:
Architecture – AeroDesign Group; The New Indianapolis Airport
Community Development – F.A.Wilhelm Construction; The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Intermodal Facility, Phase II
Construction – Hunt Construction Group; Lucas Oil Stadium
Downtown Development – Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects; Lucas Oil Stadium
Engineering – Moore Engineers PC; Lucas Oil Stadium
Innovative Reuse – Axis Architecture; Exact Target – Corporate Office Interior
Interior Design – Axis Architecture; Exact Target – Corporate Office Interior
Landscape Architecture – Synthesis Incorporated; The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis = Phase II Intermodal Facility
Public Art – IND Foundation; Public Art at Indianapolis International Airport
(re)thINk – Jones Lang LaSalle/Kite; Eli Lilly Sustainable Garden

The awards are selected by an impartial jury of community and professional leaders. The Monumental Award is the highest award of distinction and is chosen from the honor award winners in each category. Ice Miller LLP and its Green Industries Initiative sponsored the awards dinner and ceremony.

"Amongst the most highly honored projects, community leaders that juried the Monumental Award said the airport emerged from the pack because of its substantial civic impact,” said KIB President and Monumental Affair Awards emcee, David Forsell. “The airport not only is a place for planes and passengers to arrive and depart, but it is a place that aspired to build sustainably, and to incorporate public art that lifts the spirit. The airport often is our city's first impression to the millions of people who visit, and is a tremendous source of pride for residents of Indianapolis and the region."
In line with this year’s theme: “Innovation in Indy,” the new “(re)thINk” award was presented to Jones Lang LaSalle/Kite for the Eli Lilly Sustainable Garden by the U.S. Green Building Council to honor sustainable design and construction.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Randall Howard, Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer at Ball State University, spoke about the university’s geothermal project, which is the largest of its kind in the U.S. Dr. Howard talked about the project’s financial and environmental impacts, and how the project has elevated Ball State to a nationally recognized leadership position in sustainability.

“When completed, the geothermal project will cut the university’s carbon footprint almost in half and result in annual savings of about $2.3 million,” said Howard. As exciting as these two benefits are, Dr. Howard also stressed that the University is excited about taking a leadership role in this proof of concept program. “Ball State University, and our nationally ranked College of Architecture and Planning, have a long history of being leaders in sustainability. This project will serve as a role model for other institutions and will provide a learning laboratory for faculty research and immersive learning opportunities for our students.”

The awards program and event, presented by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. with the support of the Indiana Chapter of Society for Marketing Professional Services and the City of Indianapolis, also raises funding for Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s mission to unite people to build community and transform public spaces through aesthetic and environmental improvement.
