Event History
This
recognition program began in 1977 through the efforts of the City of
Indianapolis, Department of Metropolitan Development and the Commission
for Downtown.
Joining this effort later were the local chapter of the American Institute
of Architects, the state chapters of the American Society of Landscape
Architects, the American Society of Interior Designers, the International
Interior Design Association, the Indianapolis Coalition for Neighborhood
Development and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
In
1996, the program included a new
category for the construction industry.
In
2004, the program added the
Engineering Award to create
the most
inclusive design awards
presentation in our city.
In 2005, another new category was
added: Public Art. This
award seeks to recognize notable public art projects that demonstrate the
outstanding professional achievement of artists and how our
city can benefit from the increased involvement of artists in the planning
of our public spaces.
In 2007, yet
another new category has been added: Innovative Reuse. This
award seeks to recognize projects which demonstrate innovative transformation of vacant or underutilized buildings. Creative
restoration of historical building(s) and environmental responsibility are
also key judging components. This award continues to support
projects where the community benefits and the neighborhood appearance is
positively impacted.
