MONUMENTAL AFFAIR: PUBLIC ART
MA Public Art: Entry Requirements and Judging Requirements
Sanctioning Organization
Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission (ICDC)
Entry Requirements
Projects completed between July 2005 and July 2009 are eligible for submission. In addition to the information specified in the project narrative (item #3) in the entry instructions, please include an overview of the selection process (how and why the artist or design team was selected), the names of all the partners (this is unique to our category as we do not want this to be a blind adjudication and would like to credit the applicant as well as the businesses, individuals, and organizations who worked to complete the project), and the overall budget for the project.
All other requirements as noted in the entry instructions.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
According to A Monumental Affair’s eligibility section, projects may include both public and private sector facilities. However, for a project to be eligible in this category it must be accessible to the general public.
Please review the following definitions to ensure that your project qualifies:
- A public art project is defined as a project created by or with an artist in a public space.
- A public space is defined as a site that experiences a high level of pedestrian and/or vehicular traffic and is easily visible and/or accessible. A project may be created for an interior site but should be accessible to the public during normal building operating hours without the need to obtain a special permit, pass, or ticket. Exterior projects should be publicly accessible 24 hours a day or, if in a park setting, should be accessible during the normal hours of that park’s operation.
Judging Criteria
The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission seeks to recognize notable public art projects that demonstrate the outstanding professional achievement of artists and other creative professionals. Our goal is to highlight how the quality of life in our city can benefit from the increased involvement of creative professionals in the planning of our city’s public spaces.
The selection criteria in this category includes:
- Aesthetic and conceptual rigor.
- Site-specific and/or community-specific approach.
- Positive impact on the site and/or surrounding community.
- Success in addressing issues of public safety and maintenance.
