Limit 30 people What is a rain garden? What is a bio-swale? How are they different from retention/detention ponds and ditches? Why do we need any of this stuff anyway? Come learn about Best Management Practices (BMP’s) for controlling stormwater in your neighborhood or on own property from Shaena Reinhart, Senior Environmental Planner with Empower Results, LLC. In the KIB classroom on Thursday evening we will learn the do’s and don’t’s of where and how to build your own rain garden: where to dig, what soil to use, and what plants to grow. On Saturday, we will be taking a field trip in KIB vans, visiting rain gardens built by KIB and others, and discussing factors that make them more or less effective. Attendees on Thursday are encouraged but not required to participate in the Saturday field trip. | |
November 102011 Spirit & PlaceAnatomy of a School Lunch KIB's gardening expert, Ginny Roberts will discuss community vegetable gardening programs in Indianapolis, including school initiatives with IPS. Then, Laura McCarthy, Obesity Prevention Team Leader at IU Health, will discuss the ways our environment contributes to adult and childhood obesity and will challenge community members to get involved in improving the nutrition and physical activity environment of our Hoosier state. This event will take place at Center for Inquiry 3, at IPS #27, the Charity Dye School, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. |
