INDIANAPOLIS – (December 13, 2011) Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) announced today that it has received a $1,000 award from Keep America Beautiful (KAB) as part of a nationwide effort sponsored by Nestlé Waters North America to encourage local PET (plastic bottle) recycling during the 2011 Great American Cleanup. The Great American Cleanup, a program of KAB, is the nation’s largest community improvement program.
KIB’s version of this program is the Great Indy Cleanup program, which runs from April through October each year. Last year, volunteers picked up more than 1.8 million pounds of litter during the month of April alone! An anti-litter program designed to combat heavy litter, debris and illegal dumping that has accumulated in public spaces such as streets, alleys, greenspaces and waterways, the 2011 Great Indy Cleanup program included a massive citywide “kick off” effort during the entire month of April. Volunteers sort litter collected, to ensure they are recycling items such as plastic bottles, during each cleanup.
The Great Indy Cleanup is made possible by the City of Indianapolis, Covanta Energy, South Side Landfill, Republic Services, and The Kroger Corp. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is grateful for this generous award from Nestlé Waters North America and Keep America Beautiful.
