While Apple, Google, or Facebook might prefer not to share their data with the public, we are looking for more and more ways to share ours. The problem with data is that most people don’t know what to do with it. It gets boring looking at spreadsheets—don’t get me wrong, I love an organized spreadsheet! If only there were some way to look at a ridiculous amount of data in a format that someone could easily understand at a glance…
And thus Geographic Information Systems were born!
Whether it is redrawing the boundaries of Crimea or searching for Malaysian Airline’s missing jet, Geographic Information Systems are a powerhouse of world influence. While most of us think of maps as a tool to get from A to B, they are increasingly being used for the connections and complexities that geographic features represent.
Our government tracks a ridiculous amount of data; and thank goodness, because most infrastructure, businesses, and nonprofits rely heavily on that data. Plus, the census keeps making it easier for us to access that data!
