GIS 101 Or: How to Tame Your Data

If you have not checked out the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Adopt-A-Block Map, you are missing out!

While Apple, Google, or Facebook might prefer not to share their data with the public, we are looking for more and more ways to share ours.  The problem with data is that most people don’t know what to do with it.  It gets boring looking at spreadsheets—don’t get me wrong, I love an organized spreadsheet!  If only there were some way to look at a ridiculous amount of data in a format that someone could easily understand at a glance…

And thus Geographic Information Systems were born!

Whether it is redrawing the boundaries of Crimea or searching for Malaysian Airline’s missing jet, Geographic Information Systems are a powerhouse of world influence.  While most of us think of maps as a tool to get from A to B, they are increasingly being used for the connections and complexities that geographic features represent.

Be sure to check out how we utilize data to track and manage our trees, and keep your eyes peeled for more maps to come!
