Garrett Wilson is the founder of Concrete Liberty is a group based out of Indianapolis, Indiana focused on promoting social responsibility within the sport of Longboard Skateboarding and advocating Longboard skateboarding as a low impact, green means of transportation. We believe that Longboard Skateboarding is a great sport for any age, skill level, and gender. It’s a good activity to stay healthy and have fun! Concrete Liberty rides in and for the community. We plan and organize group rides, meet and greets, events and activities, and keeps the local longboard community informed.
How long have you been volunteering with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
This is my first year with KIB, but I have been doing my own green projects for the past 3 years.
Why do you choose to volunteer with KIB?
I love the work they do!
What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
I believe that KIB has a tremendous impact on the community. Ever since I was in High School, I have been involved in politics. I went into College wanting to study political science. Through learning about our political system and why we have the problems we do, I realized that lack of responsibility is a major source of our problems. Not only is KIB making the community a more beautiful place, but it is also sharing a message of responsibility. Showing the community how to be accountable for your actions. This the message I am trying to spread to the skateboard community with my organization Concrete Liberty. Together with KIB, we can teach this message to younger kids who may not be interested in cleaning up our community. But throw skateboarding into the mix, along with some prizes, and they get excited to clean up the area!
Everyone should volunteer with KIB at least once! You make a difference and you make some great friends! It’s very enjoyable.
