Description: FHC is one of the most successful community vegetable gardens in the inner city. The garden was started in 2005 and has grown to a fully functioning youth center with fruits, vegetables, composting, recycling and water collection serving as the curriculum. With most of the more than 300 youth participating in this summer’s program coming from under-priveleged or under-served areas, learning with a hands-on approach in the garden and in the classroom was of utmost importance. This summer also saw the finished renovation of one of the two “shotgun” style houses located on the grounds complete with kitchen, bathroom, walls and floors (this just gives you an idea of what we were working with before). After a great harvest with help from Grace Community Church, the center is now preparing for next year and beyond.
