KIB Tours:
KIB gives building and grounds tours the first Monday of every month at 4 p.m., and to groups by appointment as able. Contact Laura Fox at lfox@kibi.org for more information.
"Thanks again for allowing us to use your facility as a great example of green design and construction in practice. The results of our attendee surveys show that those in attendance thought the program and tour were very informative and interesting. We are fortunate to have a great example of a public serving building being designed and constructed in a public serving way. KIB Headquarters is one of the few LEED certified projects constructed that has met such a high standard of sustainability. It serves as a great model of how green technologies can be implemented in an aesthetically pleasing, well-functioning and cost-effective way." ~ Kelli Lawrence, Development Partner, Hearthview Residential and Chairman of Young Leaders Group, Urban Land Institute Indiana
New Fact:
KIB's mechanical and electrical systems, designed to be efficient and better for the environment, are now projected to reduce our energy use (electric/natural gas) by 21% compared to a standard design. This choice is not only better for the environment, but will save KIB in the neighborhood of $4,000 annually compared to a standard design. This new information will be used when we submit an application for LEED Gold Certification.
About This Location:
Our new location is where SEND
(Southeast
Neighborhood Development)
has already invested in many community improvements.
KIB is excited to be part of the up and coming neighborhood in Fountain Square.
Click now to see an aerial
view of our new location. Relocating
into a new building with all our facilities and operations in one place
now meets the primary need of increasing efficiencies in delivering our
services to the community; secondarily, it is a civic example of
sustainable design and redevelopment, and contributes to the vitality and
aesthetics of one of the city’s great neighborhoods and cultural districts.
KIB anticipates being able to better serve its many constituents, including
one million metropolitan residents, 30,000 volunteers and many other
partners.
Purchasing and rehabbing the building at 1029 Fletcher has allowed KIB to
consolidate its resources, saved time and money. KIB staff estimates
they wasted 350 hours driving between various sites in 2006.
KIB also has incorporated as many "green" elements into
the design as possible, with LEED certification as a goal. This is yet another
way KIB will be able to exemplify its mission in this location.
The building will also be near the upcoming
Cultural Trail.
Having a green resource as a possible destination near the Trail is a very
exciting prospect for KIB and for the city.

At the invitation of Chris Harrell, who heads brownfield redevelopment for the City of Indianapolis, members of the US EPA Region V, based in Chicago, toured the KIB headquarters in December, 2008. KIB President David Forsell, at left, told them about the site's turnaround from a vacant and contaminated brownfield to a vibrant and healthy commercial property, made possible through partnerships with the City and the State of Indiana's Petroleum Remediation Grants program.

Mayor Greg Ballard gets a tour of the new sustainable KIB headquarters. He is joined by (L to R) KIB President David Forsell, RATIO Architects President Bill Browne, Shiel Sexton Company President Mike Dilts (partially obscured) and KIB Board President Tony Steinhardt. Hundreds of people have toured the facility since its opening in June.
