Work changes for the Youth Tree Team
The weather has gotten cooler and wetter and that means the Youth Tree Team is doing less watering.
Now, we are spending our Saturday work days mulching and pruning hundreds of trees around the city.
Several of the youth have also gotten the chance to help with tree plantings.
Last Saturday we took part in a large tree planting in the historic St Joseph Neighborhood downtown. About 40 trees were set up in the area for the planting and dozens of volunteers came out to help. Because so many people came out to help we got all the trees planted in less than an hour.
My group worked in a particularly muddy spot near the corner of Alabama and 11th. Four of us from the Youth Tree team worked with four others to plant three Wildfire Black Gums.
Under the mud we hit a lot of rocks. We spent the majority of the time breaking up the rocks (an scraping off our shoes!!). Once the rocks were gone we managed to dig large enough holes for the trees. After the hard part, our group successfully and quickly got all three trees planted and mulched.
By that time ,the tree planting was over.
On the way home, the YTT stopped by a church to plant one last tree and it was time to call it a day.
