Top Ten Hidden Beauty Spots in Indy

Top Ten Hidden Beauty Spots in Indy

Your mission, if you decide to accept, is to help me locate The Top Ten Hidden Beauty Spots in Indy, key word here being “Hidden.” Everyone already knows about all the Beauty at Butler University’s Holcomb Gardens and in the Indianapolis Museum of Art so don’t choose those or other obvious sites.

So what is Beauty, you ask. Is it strictly subjective ("Beauty is in the eye of the beholder") or is there some objectivity to its determination? What criteria will be used to include your entry in the Top Ten? In order to help narrow your search, I Googled Beauty and found enough quotes to choke Deep Throat.

I chose the following three, combining their messages to build a description of how Beauty will be defined for this contest.

  • Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. Confucius
  • Beauty awakens the soul to act. Dante Alighieri
  • Beauty is whatever gives joy. Edna St. Vincent Millay

So the Beauty Spots you find should be somewhat concealed, prompt one to action and fill the viewer with joy. To show you a few examples of what might be included on the list, I packed up the digital camera, hopped on my bicycle and toured the northeast side of Indy.

Here’s what I found.

  1. The Indiana School for the Deaf Monon Trail Plaza - a vibrantly colored mosaic structure illustrating various facets of the deaf culture
  2. The Indy Skyline - the big city as seen through a soccer goal
  3. Lake Maxinhall - an 83 acre spring-fed lake right in the heart of Indy just 15 minutes from downtown

Post your locations in the comments section. Prizes galore, valued at inestimable amounts, will be awarded by KIB for the most Beautiful submissions. Entries must be submitted by September 30th and will be judged by a panel of The Top Ten Most Beautiful People at KIB. Happy searching.

Dennis Brake is a recent enrollee in the very exclusive 9% Unemployed Club who finds himself too young, too poor and too full of energy to refer to himself using the “R” word. He volunteers at KIB writing Blogs and entertaining the troops. His son, Andrew, is currently a Program Coordinator at KIB and the future mayor of Indianapolis.

Thanks to everyone who is commenting about all the Beauty Spots in Indy but we need photos. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words or a prize from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful's treasure trove of goodies.

Riding your bike south of 30th St through Riverside Park along white river you fell like you are in another city and it end with a ride along the river by the zoo. Then onto the old Washington St. Bridge facing east for the best view of our beautiful downtown.

Garfield Park Conservatory is really beautiful, especially in the spring. Also on the south side of Indy in the country at the crossroad of Co. Rd. 750N (otherwise know as Worthsville Rd E) & S 5 Points Rd (just next to the Glade Cemetary) is a beautiful, huge field of sunflowers in the fall.

The trail from the zoo to New York street along White River Parkway is gorgeous, a bit secluded, with historical limestone pieces along the way. It's a great end to a walk or bike ride from the bridge across the White River with all the art sculptures in the median.

#1, definitely. I always mention it to people when they talk about how incredible the Monon Trail is (while hardly 'hidden,' certainly a place of beauty). That stop at ISD is a must.

So you said the skyline, but that is a fairly generic thing because certain locations have been views of the skyline than others. I have two favorites (and if the comments allowed pictures I would post them). The first is sitting atop Crowe Hill Cemetary at James Whitcomb Riley's tomb. From there you can see the skyline, most of the cemetary, and some of the IMA's campus. My second favorite is sitting on the bridge that takes you from the downtown canal to the Indianapolis Zoo. If you look back at the skyline it is magnificient...though I'm not sure if the view is as good now that the JW has gone up (a cool looking building, but it may be obscuring the rest of the skyline, I'll need to check that out).
