Sustainability - The Complete Picture

Submitted March 06, 2010 by David Forsell | 4 comments

Today at KIB, we have 400 youth trying out to be a part of our Youth Tree Team. 400! The tough part? Right now funding enables to hire only 40. If you'd like to help, please get in touch with us.

Here is a question for you...

What do you get when you put together urban trees, and youth paid to care for them? What you get is a glimmer of our vision at KIB: every neighborhood thriving and well, a flourishing environment, and a caring and participatory community. And, you get opportunity for young people.

Urban trees clean the air, they clean our water. They add value to neighborhoods, and with their shade and canopy, create inviting, and safer public places.

When kids join our Youth Tree Team, and are paid to care for these trees, often they're providing necessary income for their families. Through these entry level green jobs, they also begin to see beyond themselves, find points of self discovery, and become more capable and well-rounded individuals contributing to the well being of Indianapolis.

Our youth tree team will care for 2,000 trees this summer. That care will ensure the trees KIB and the community plant today, are here when we're old, gray, or gone. Kids are earning a buck, but more important, they are making a contribution.

Learn more about the Youth Tree Team, KIB's plan to plant 100,000 trees, and how you can help, here at www.kibi.org.

Is there anyway at the Warren Township Clean up Day, special bags could be used to collect the recyclable cans and bottles so they are not just thrown away?

Amy~ It is too late for your child to apply for 2010. Note that there is information on the website about 2011. Thanks for your interest.

What a great opportunity for teens...just read about this in The Star. Is it too late for my 14 year old to apply for one of the 40 jobs?
