Day 21: Dig Deep!

Today was KIB's annual fund-raiser dubbed Dig Deep. It was a confirming expeirence, I heard about the important projects KIB is doing, and how the trees I am planting is helping the community. At the event we heard from volunteers, community leaders, and a high school girl who told about her experiences as a Youth Tree Team. I'm going to take a bit of a short-cut on today's blog. As opposed to be recounting the entire experience, I thought I would just embed the video from today's event. It really says everything that needs to be said about how great KIB is.
After the event I took a nice 9 foot tall Yellow Buckeye (Aesculus flava) off the stage and with the help of Molly (KIB Tree Team) and 3 members of the tree team. These are kids who spend their summers taking care of trees and their spring and falls planting them. They are tree experts, so i was very excited that I taught them something new. It was something small, but whenever I plant a tree, I place a tarp next to the hole and shovel all the dirt onto the tarp. This makes it a lot easier to get ot the dirt back into the hole. After raking about half of it back in, you can just lift the tarp and dump it.
I'm keeping the blog short today, because tomorrow is a big day. My 22nd tree will be a part of ~100 trees that are being planted by the firm I work at, Crowe Horwath. We are contributing to the Superbowl Legacy Project by planting trees on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. These trees will help the city get to its goal of 2012 trees by 2012! I'm going to need a good night sleep before tomorrow's full day of planting.
