DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JULY 2011

John Kyle

Tell us a little about yourself.
I have been practicing environmental law since 1979 and have been with the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg LLP since 1982. I chaired our firm-wide Environmental Department for approximately 12 years, ending in 2006. I grew up in Noblesville, Ind. and moved all the way south to Fishers. But I have worked downtown Indianapolis since 1982.

My hobbies are gardening (flowers and vegetables), golfing, exercise, and traveling. In addition to KIB, I am currently on the Board of Directors of the Sycamore Land Trust, a land trust headquartered in Bloomington.

Why did you first support KIB?
I first supported KIB because it seemed like a worthwhile environmental organization that would provide a nice fit with my practice and personal interests.

What keeps you involved?
No one asked me to leave, and until recently, we did not have term limits. Seriously, I have been unable to find another not-for-profit in our city that I would like to spend my time on that has as much opportunity to not only improve the quality of our natural environment, but to improve the quality of our natural environment in neighborhoods, thereby improving the lives of people in our Indianapolis neighborhoods, particularly those neighborhoods that are often times in greatest need.

Do you have a favorite flower or tree?
Tulip tree (in bloom) and irises and trumpet lillies.

In addition to the generosity of partner John Kyle, Barnes & Thornburg LLP has also been an outstanding supporter of KIB. They have hosted and underwritten the cost of our annual Donor Lunch for the last 16 years, and provided pro bono legal services. The value of this support over the past year alone has exceeded $50,000.
