Mission:
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. unites people to
beautify the city, improve the environment, and foster pride in the
community. Our mission is to have a viable, sustainable impact on the
lives of residents in the Indianapolis area and the neighborhoods in
which they live. We do this through active partnerships with
neighborhoods, businesses, youth, schools, community leaders and
government.
Vision:
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful will be the catalyst for innovative, hands
on programs that will make Indianapolis the most beautiful city in
America. It will also be recognized as a significant contributor to a
better local environment through responsible partnerships, a committed
volunteer force, and the development of financial resources necessary to
ensure successful programs and a vital future for the organization.
As a
result, we will foster and enhance a sense of ownership and pride in
every citizen, contributing to the economic and environmental vitality
of our community.
History:
Founded in 1976 as Indianapolis Clean City, Keep Indianapolis
Beautiful changed its name in 1997, to better reflect its efforts in the
community. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is a 501c (3), private,
not-for-profit organization. It is an award-winning affiliate of Keep
America Beautiful, Inc.; the national organization dedicated to
preserving the natural beauty and environment in American communities.
Funding:
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is supported by corporations, foundations,
individuals, civic groups, and a professional service contract with the
City of Indianapolis. For the year ended December 31, 2000, 62 percent
of the annual budget is comprised of private dollars, and 38 percent
public.
Management:
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is governed by a 35-member board of
directors composed of representatives from the private and public
sectors. A full-time president directs a twelve-member staff.
Volunteers:
Volunteers are vital to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s
projects. In 2007, 29,017 volunteers supported cleanup efforts and
revitalized our neighborhoods around the city. These volunteers
contributed 110,000 hours of service by cleaning up litter,
painting houses, planting trees and flowers, and assisting with special
projects. The majority of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s volunteer
opportunities are family friendly.
