2010 DONOR OF THE YEAR
Every year, KIB recognizes some of our strongest supporters at our Annual Donor Recognition Luncheon.
The following are our award winners for 2010:
BOARD MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Tim George
Occupation
I am a Vice President at RW Armstrong, a global engineering consulting firm.
In which neighborhood do you live?
I live on the northeast side in Ivy Hills — a friendly, well-established neighborhood with lots of mature trees and wildlife (even though it’s just south of Castleton!).
What is the most inspiring place in Indianapolis?
I have always loved the Monon Trail, which is a great asset to Indianapolis as an urban, linear trail. I have spent many hours over the years biking, jogging, and rollerblading on the stretch from Broad Ripple to 82nd.
How long have you supported Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
I was first introduced to KIB when I worked for the City in public works over 10 years ago. I started volunteering and contributing heavily about five years ago and joined the board three years ago.
Why do you support KIB?
KIB is a great opportunity for me to meld my professional and personal missions to improve the environment and positively impact our city.
What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
KIB brings people together to strengthen neighborhoods through environmental and visual improvements and create inspiring public spaces such as the I-70 beautification from the airport to downtown. This unquestionably improves the quality of life in Indianapolis.
Why would you encourage others to support KIB?
KIB is an opportunity to invest in Indianapolis and make it a better place to live. You will certainly see tangible benefits (e.g., trees, parks, public art) to our city by supporting KIB.
INDIVIDUAL DONOR OF THE YEAR
Susan Fleck
Occupation
Owner of Susan Fleck Photogragphy, LLC
In which neighborhood do you live?
Homecroft
What is the most inspiring place in Indianapolis?
The parks and waterways in Indianapolis inspire me to be more deliberate in caring for the environment.
How long have you supported Keep Indianapolis Beautiful?
Perhaps six years
Why do you support KIB?
Initially we supported KIB because my husband David Wantz was elected to the board. Then we decided it was the right thing to do with our charitable giving. When I left full-time teaching at Franklin College to start my company, I decided to give away the first ten percent of my income. I believe to whom much is given, much is required. So, we give our money to those organizations working in Marion County who make a difference our neighbors’ lives, whether that is the Julian Center, Gleaners, or KIB.
What impact do you feel that the work with KIB has on the community?
The air is cleaner, neighborhoods are safer, there is more beauty, and people come out of their houses to join with others for the common good.
What else are you involved in within the community?
I am involved with professional organizations (SMPS as its treasurer), reading for vision-impaired folks at WFYI, and through my church.
Why would you encourage others to support KIB?
KIB is an excellent steward of the resources, it leverages my gifts as much as eight times, it has a breathtaking vision, and it gets stuff done!
ORGANIZATION DONOR OF THE YEAR
Kroger Corp.

Corporate partnerships are vital to KIB’s work. Kroger has made a significant commitment to KIB AND to the social fabric of neighborhoods where they are located. They have demonstrated significant investment in local nonprofits, of which KIB is one. Their giving, over more than a decade to KIB, amounts to more than $200,000. This year’s investment helped KIB plant trees, recycle a lot of paper, feed a lot of clean up volunteers, pretty up a number of properties, and in years past, educate youth and green up a major city thoroughfare. Kroger approaches their philanthropy with a truly collaborative spirit, and demonstrates their care for the environment and sustainability in ways that have attracted national attention. Congratulations to the Kroger Corp, KIB's 2010 Organizational Donor of the Year!
